• The mains switch allows you to turn off the electricity supply to your
electrical installation. Some installations have more than one
mains switch, such as those with storage heaters.
Find out where this switch is to turn the electricity off in an emergency.
• Do you have an installation with an RCD fitted? This a switching device that trips a circuit under certain
conditions, and disconnects the electricity supply.
If you have one or more then test them
regularly, at least once every 3 months.
• Do you have a consumer unit (fuse box) with a circuit chart? Use this to switch off part of your installation for maintenance.
• If you have young children then consider placing caps over the sockets.
• Don't use adaptors plugged into other adaptors and don't overload adaptors, especially with high-current appliances
such as kettles, irons and heaters. (Low-current appliances
such as radios, televisions, computers and hi-fi equipment are perfectly OK)
• Proper earthing is vital in an electrical installation. This in conjuction with other devices such as RCDs will give a high degree of saftey in event of an electrical fault.
